Linux is the common name of Unix-like operating systems, based on the eponymous core. The Linux kernel is created and distributed in accordance with the development model of free and open source software. Therefore, the common name does not imply a single "official" complete Linux; they are distributed mainly in the form of free distributions of various finished with its own set of applications and is already configured to the specific needs of the user.
Initially, Linux was designed for free only enthusiastic volunteers, but with the success of Linux and its massive commercial use of modifying the operating system and contribute to the company, it became, over time, a significant force. The vast majority of software in modern distributions are still available under a free license, as a rule, except for a small number of proprietary components. In 2008, the calculations show that in order to "from scratch" to develop a system similar to Fedora 9, would be required to spend $ 10.8 billion.  The total cost of the Linux kernel is estimated at more than 1 billion euros (about 1.4 bln). In 2008 alone, the cost of the Linux kernel increased by 225 million euros. Currently, the Linux market-leading smartphones (Android takes 85% of the market ), Internet servers (60%), the most powerful supercomputers (97%) and, according to Linux Foundation, in data centers and enterprises, occupy half of the market of embedded systems, have a significant share of the netbook market (32% in 2009). The market for home computers Linux firmly holds the 3rd place (according to various estimates, from 1 to 5%). According to research by Goldman Sachs, as a whole, the market share of Linux among electronic devices is about 42%.
Since the Linux kernel was created for x86-PC, it has been ported to many platforms, including x86-64, PowerPC and ARM. Linux runs on routers, TVs and game consoles. OS kernel continues to improve rapidly (for example, the new kernel version is released every 2-3 months, since 2005 in the development of the kernel is attended by over 7,800 developers from more than 800 different companies) and is gaining popularity (for 9 months from May 2011 to January 2012 the share of Linux has increased by 64%).
The most popular distributions are (in alphabetical order the names of their packet formats): deb-based (Debian, Mint, Ubuntu), pacman-based (Arch Linux, Chakra, Manjaro), RPM-based (RedHat, Fedora, Mageia, OpenSUSE) , source-based (Slackware, Gentoo).
Unix operating system was developed in 1969 at Bell Laboratories of AT & T in the US Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritchie, Douglas McIlroy, and Joe hosanna.
Unix was originally written entirely in assembly language, which was common practice at the time. Later, in the years 1973-75, it was rewritten in the C programming language.
The fact that the operating system was written in high level language, it allows us to simplify porting to different computer platforms. Because of the license AT & T was forced to open the source code of the operating system all addressed, enabling Unix develop rapidly and become popular in many scientific institutions and enterprises.
